The Motor City:

Detroit and the Culture of

Post-Industrial America

In this course, we examine the cultural history of Detroit, and also explore transnational networks of cultural exchange between Detroit and Germany. The city of Detroit (“The Motor City”) gained international notoriety as the center of American automobile manufacturing, a metropolis inextricably linked with the rise and fall of American industry. Since the dramatic loss of manufacturing jobs in the late twentieth century, Detroit’s economy has suffered hard times. The fortunes and misfortunes of Detroit have received much popular and scholarly attention in recent years, often serving as a case study of ‘post-industrial America’ writ large.
